Stress! Stress!! Stress!!!
There was a time in my life when my skin was ever radiant and supple. It is true that the more we grow and age, the less attention we give to ourselves. And as we age, natural changes occur to our skin. In trying to cope with all the hustling and bustling of life, we often tend to forget ourselves and the simple things that matters. I can't believe I have allowed myself to be overwhelmed over issues of life, motherhood, finances and career. I watched silently and helpless as my radiant face got damaged right in front of me. I admit I neglected all my self care routine simply because I don't get motivated and sometimes overly tired to even try.
I am one person that feels I can handle stress so graciously. I was in denial that the causal factor for my damaged skin was stress. I could probably say, I was hit by hidden stress, worries and restless thoughts. Mind you, these are just random worries that disturbs my head. I never knew stress could become so evident that I hardly recognise this person in the mirror.
Fear gripped me as I watched my hair fall off, my waxed, trimmed eyebrow refused to grow itself back for well over six months, my edges failed to thrive, my skin became very dry and flaky even with the use of my expensive beauty products.
Web Md revealed that stress can affect hair, skin, nails including the whole body. The bitter truth is that stress is part of our life, our disposition and how we are able to manage it, makes the difference. Can I add?, stress is no respecter of any class, person, race or age. It comes in different level and stages.
Does stress affects the skin? Oh yes!
Dr Budh-Raja explained that stress increases cortisol production from the adrenal glands, which in turn increases sebaceous gland activity, to produce more oil and sebum,”. The result can be acne and increased sensitivity of our skin. It also make it harder for skin to heal and regenerate.
The skin breaks out more when you’re stressed or overwhelmed. This is because stress sends signals to your body to make hormones like cortisol, which tells glands in your skin to make more oil. Oily skin is more prone to acne and other skin related problems.
The moment you interfere or neglect your daily skin care due to stress or being overwhelmed, your skin is prone to having issues. Our body, hair and skin needs a daily dose of our tender, loving and care.
It is stressful to have problems with your skin. I have been uncomfortable in my skin, my face, especially, as that's where it is most visible. I tried so many cosmetics and beauty products on my face, but it seems I was chasing a running shadow. The fact that I am not getting my desired results kept adding to my stress level.
In case you have a skin problem, that is recurring, take a moment to breathe, rethink how you handle stress and tell yourself, you are going to beat stress.

It's unfeasible to avoid stress completely, but you can try ways to manage it better. Try these approaches:
1. Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake. These two culprits have a way of sneaking into one's affair and leave an indelible mark on our skin if not controlled.
2. Pay attention to your skin. Make an effort to take care of it daily, even if you're tired or stressed. If you don't take care of your skin, who will? Invest in quality skin care routine.
3. Regular exercising. It's beneficial to the skin and also to the whole mental and well being.
4. Reframe your thoughts. We all need to have an escape route for me-time. Do what you enjoy and dwell in it even if it's for few minutes. You will be refreshed.
5.Stay connected. Positive Support system is beneficial to our mental well being. Talk and laugh with people that you trust and are valuable to you. Loneliness could increase anxiety.
6. Relaxation techniques. Meditation, Yoga and breathing exercises are also good management practices. Can I add that essential oils has been a huge life saver for me. I love to inhale the peppermint flavour which helps me with clarity and relaxation, here is the one I used from amazon organic peppermint oil.
7. Get better sleep. Getting enough and quality sleep is beneficial. An average of 8 hours sleep is recommended.
8. Take control. It's important to take control of our daily affairs and say no where necessary. Setting boundaries lower stress level.
